چکیده

A Ramsey interrogation scheme was used to measure the phase shift of laser-cooled Rb clocktransition pseudospins arising as a result of a reversal of a bias magnetic field, i.e., B → −B, during the interrogation. While no phase shift occurred when the reversal was sudden, the Ramsey fringes were shifted by a factor of π when the reversal was adiabatic. We thus verified the prediction that the spin states |F,m = 0〉 acquire a purely topological and parity-dependent phase factor of (−1) as a result of B → −B.

The quantum state of a system of n qubits can be represented by a Wigner function on a discrete phase space, each axis of the phase space taking values in the finite field F 2 n. Within this framework, we show that one can make sense of the notion of a " rotationally invariant state " of any collection of qubits, and that any such state is, in a well defined sense, a state of minimum uncertainty.

After introducing some cohomology classes as obstructions to orientation and spin structures etc., we explain some applications of cohomology to physical problems, in especial to reduced holonomy in M and F -theories.

The central claim that understanding quantum mechanics requires a conscious observer, which is made made by B. Rosenblum and F. Kuttner in their book ”Quantum Enigma: Physics encounters consciousnes”, is shown to be based on various misunderstandings and distortions of the foundations of quantum mechanics.
